Erin’s Autobiographical Information
Hi! My name is Erin McIntosh and I am a first year teacher. I graduated in May 2007 from UNC Charlotte with a BA in Child and Family Development and a Birth-Kindergarten teaching license. My goal at that time was to teach preschool or kindergarten. Upon graduation I moved home to Rutherfordton, NC where I began my job search. I had no luck finding a job in my area so I began to explore other options. I was contemplating going back to school when I stumbled upon a job opening at a local high school. The position called for someone licensed to teach Family and Consumer Science especially in the area of Parenting and Child Development. So without hesitation I called for an interview. I was hired on the spot with the understanding that I would have to complete some extra courses in specialized areas as well as take the Praxis II. I was so excited! So I have been teaching Parenting and Child Development and Teen Living for the past year and I love it. It is a big change from the “little guys” but a good one at that. No more lining up to go potty, tying shoes, or blowing noses…high school kids can pretty much do that on their own, although I do have to wipe a few tears now and then. Family and Consumer Science classes are very important for high school children to have available to them. In these classes they learn skills that will help them to become responsible adults.
I am not married and I have no human children. I do have a dog named Jack whom I consider to be my baby. When I have spare time I enjoy reading, especially southern fiction. I also enjoy lying by the pool in the summer time and walking. I spend most of my time at the high school where I work. I am involved in many extracurricular activities. I work two days a week in the tutoring center after school, advise the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America club, head-up the new freshman orientation program, and coach the varsity cheerleading squad. I am a busy lady but I pride myself in being involved in my school and in the lives of my students.

Hi Erin!
Posted 1 year, 2 months agoIt sounds like you are a busy woman. I remember taking Teen Living when I was a freshman in highschool. It was a very fun class. I read where you coach varsity cheerleading. I was a cheerleader all through highschool and I absolutely loved it! I went to Bandys Highschool in Catawba, NC. Our cheerleading squad wasn’t that good but we had plenty of school spirit. Well I hope you enjoy your semester and good luck! Look forward to meeting you!
Take care,
Rachel Eisenhower
Hey Erin,
You sure are a busy lady. I have been working as a TA in a local high school in the Family and Consumer Science classes along with the Career and Technical Education Department. I have spent many of my days helping with the Parent and Child Deveopment and Teen Living classes. I also know about working with the very young along with the very old. I think we have quite a few things in common. I lokk forward to having ou in class!!! See ya.

Posted 1 year, 2 months agoHey Erin,
Posted 1 year, 2 months agoSOunds like you keep yourself pretty occupied, it is cool that you do that much at your school. You are really there for the kids and that makes all the difference to them. I never took any Child Development classes I was in the Agriculture Department, but I was always a little curious about what all went on in that classroom.
Well I reckon I will get to meet you tommorrow.

Erin…Sounds like you’ve really found your calling, and are very busy. We both enjoy a couple of the same things…I love coaching and my Lab, Nala.
Posted 1 year, 2 months agoGood luck this semester.
…Chris.
Hi Erin. I would like to know how your fiirst year of teaching has gone. I have heard many different stories and would like any tips that you can offer on my first year of teaching.
Posted 1 year, 2 months agoThanks, David Sigmon.
Erin,
Posted 1 year, 2 months agoIt’s nice to meet you. The work you do with young people about to start their lives of independence is very important.
Good luck,
Frank Lilly
I’ll bet high school is quite different from preschoolers except for the tears. If given the opportunity, do you think that you would become a preschool teacher? It must be great to know that you are impacting the lives of future adults in another way.
Posted 1 year, 2 months agoHi Erin, I enjoyed meeting you last week. I, too, love southern literature — especially when sitting by the pool. From all the work you do at school, it sounds like any time you spend lounging is well-deserved and hard-earned. Roberta Wilson
Posted 1 year, 1 month agoErin, It is nice to have you in our cohort. That is great that you are teaching a subject that you love. I bet it would be fun to teach Family and Consumer Science. Welcome.

If you change your mind and decide to teach the little ones. More at 4 in Catawba County is expanding and trying to add as many as 180 students within the next year. They need teachers as fast as they are graduating. I currently work with the 4 year olds and I love it. Why am I switching to middle school…… Hmmm…
Posted 1 year, 1 month agoErin,
You will be the only person in here looking for Family and Consumer Science resources. However, I have resources for this content area. I hope you find some useful information that you can use in your course.
I know what you mean about your canine babies–I have 2.
Good Luck.
